Outdoor Learning – Colette McKale
At university, back in Scotland, we take part in various
learning activities that teachers may implement in the classroom. One of the
most interesting classes we had was about outdoor learning. Not only did we learn
about the benefits of such learning but we also got to experience it, through
exploring different outdoor environments.
I chose to do my blog post about this topic because I
understand, after researching online, that Spanish schools do not implement much
outdoor learning, in comparison with Scotland. The Scottish curriculum stresses
the importance of learning outdoors, stating that it inspires passion and motivation
among children, helping them to become healthy and responsible citizens.
For teachers, it may sometimes be difficult to plan trips
to outdoor environments but you do not need to go far to teach pupils about the
outdoors. Many schools in Scotland use their own playground area to teach children
about different things such as the environment, biodiversity or even for
teaching the different subjects.
I have included a link to a
website that provides teachers with activities and ideas of how to make
the most of teaching children outdoors:
I thought I would also include a link to another blog, written by a Spanish student who took part in outdoor learning in Scotland!
Outdoor learning is very educational for children, as
well as this, it is a lot of fun and engaging for pupils too!
